Other Thoughts: the enemy of enemy is my friend
Summer is coming to a close, and we hope you all had a good one! Like most of the internet, we’ve also been busy following the Don’t Worry Darling drama. Florence Pugh is a January Capricorn, so making a statement and being a little petty without actually saying something is right up her alley. We love mess!
However, this is a hockey newsletter, and the pre-season is upon us, so it’s time for Other Thoughts!
Best wishes to Jack Jablonski!
In an interview with the Athletic, Jack Jablonski, now a part of the LA Kings communications team, came out. Coming out is a monumental task for any person so deeply involved in the sport. The bravery and vulnerability he displayed in the article were admirable, and we hope that he finds lots of love and comfort moving forward.
Recommend giving it a read.
CM Punk has opinions on the Pittsburgh Penguins
CM Punk, apparently still wrestling, recently gave a very, uh, inspired shoutout to the Pens during a press conference in Pittsburgh.
We found it funny that Ron Francis got a call-out but no mention of the other long-time player. Poor Letang, always forgotten. However, given that CM Punk is a noted Blackhawks fan, we’re just gonna keep it pushing.
Gold for Canada at the Women’s World.
I - Gaby - was going to start this bit off with my speech on why hockey should not be at the Olympics or have world championships. I decided, however, that I didn’t particularly feel like dealing with a bunch of angry Canadians, so we’ll save it for next time.
Anyway, the Canadian Women’s National Team recently took gold at the IIHF world championships held in Denmark. For all intents and purposes, it was a fantastic game, but in true Hockey Canada fashion, it was overshadowed by another misstep.
Scott Smith - the embattled CEO of Hockey Canada - was allowed to give out the gold medals to the team. It seems like it was an intentional decision meant to establish Scott Smith as the “new” leader of the organization. Everyone involved with Hockey Canada appears to live in a different reality than the rest of us because I’m not sure why they thought this would go over well. What was supposed to be a fun moment ended up leaving a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.
We don’t have much to add other than mentioning that what we’re seeing right now is the institution’s attempt to close rank and get back to normal; it’s giving very much “nothing to see here folks!” We wrote more in-depth about this in a previous newsletter:
Nazem Kadri, Stanley Cup Champion, had his Cup Day.
A round of applause for the newest member of the Calgary Flames!! Kadri had a fun Stanley Cup celebration a couple of days ago. For probably the first time (don't quote us on that), the Cup entered a mosque. It was important for Nazem Kadri to celebrate this tremendous win with the community that always supported him. We want to shout out his Uncle Hiesam, who had the best attire for the event.
Also, the relief I - Perrye - had when I saw that Kadri wasn't taking the direction of Long Island since all the speculation was pointing in that direction. My agenda against Lou Lamoriello is stronger than the one against Brad Treliving. In a couple of years, we will definitely feel the repercussions of his deals and choices, but until then, let's stop time and enjoy this moment or whatever Pitbull was singing.
Geno Malkin - we love Malkin’s penchant for always being a little weird. (Perrye’s note: WE?!)
Malkin celebrated another trip around the sun during Leo Season, and he had an astonishing birthday party with The Lion King as the theme. I - Perrye, again - think, as a society, we shouldn’t tolerate Disney adults. I’m sorry, but you can’t expect me not to laugh at grown people making Disney films their entire personality.
Even as a big Beyoncé fan, I didn’t watch Miss Mama play Adult Nala in the film’s Live Action because I have shame and respect. The most tragic part is that Malkin isn’t the only hockey player held by this movie’s shackles. At this point, I demand an investigation.
P.-S.: As a fellow Leo girlie, I obviously don’t claim him. I hope he had a blast, tho!
Serena Williams - What a ride it’s been!
On September 2nd, Serena Williams played her last professional tennis match. Although we technically had time to process her retirement announcement, we still feel overwhelmed thinking about her legacy and what she meant to people as an athlete and legend. Perrye will write a special edition. In the meantime, we want to wish her the best and thank her for the memories.
One week left to apply for the PHWA X THWL mentorship program!
Now that we no longer hear wedding bells, watch out for our marriage extravaganza issue next week!
With love,
Perrye & Gaby
