Other Thoughts: A very special Thursday edition
The off-season is really around the corner, eh?
Since it’s been all vibes, no thoughts around these parts, we literally had one thing to write about for Tuesday. We’ve got some #content since then, so now you’re forced to listen to us. Enjoy!
Stanley Cup Finals Prediction:
Before some of y’all accuse us of bandwagoning because of last night’s game, we made our predictions on Monday. Plus, if you go back to our previous issues, we have always been consistent.
Our conference finals predictions were closer to the bullseyes than our second-round flop. We honestly thought that the Oilers would have pulled up a better fight against the Avs, but I guess their deal with the devil was only for one extra round, oop.
As for the Rangers, they made it farther than anyone expected, so for that, kudos!
Colorado Avalanche vs Tampa Bay Lightning
Perrye’s pick: I’ll go with Avs in 6 because nobody on the Lightning needs a(nother) ring. We need fresh vibes this summer. Also, nosy as I am, I simply want to know if Sid will be at Nathan’s “day with the cup” party or not?
Gaby’s pick: Avs in 7. I don’t particularly care for either team, but I don’t want to see Erik Johnson sad cry on national television, okay?
I wish I had the job security of a middle-aged white man in the NHL.
Kevin Weekes, who unexpectedly became a hockey insider this year (good for him), dropped the news that the Philadelphia Flyers were about to bring on John Tortorella. There are many reasons to dislike that man as a coach - most notably how his tenures have been exceedingly mid - but we only know that he went out of his way to hate on Anthony Duclair a couple of years ago. We don’t trust any white man that talks like this about someone:
Let us not mention his comments about kneeling, which he “changed” his mind about during the protests of 2020. Philly fans vs Torts will surely be a sight, though. My money’s on Philly.
Oh, also, Bruce Cassidy was unemployed for about 2.5 seconds and will now be joining the Vegas Golden Knights. Good for him.
Now, who’s next?
Does the NHL know anything? (rhetorical question)
I don’t think any other major league gets in its own way as much as the NHL does. Despite the growing popularity of Hockey Night Punjabi, the NHL is, for some reason, only broadcasting one (1) game in Punjabi for the finals. ESPN Deportes, the Spanish broadcaster for the league, also covers just one game of the Finals. We don’t know why the NHL isn’t pushing for more, but just for an FYI, 1 in 6 people in the United States identify as Latino, and the USA has the second-largest Spanish-speaking population in the world. Tampa’s Latino population alone is almost 30%. This seemed like a prime opportunity to recruit from non-traditional markers for a league that desperately needs new fans.
As always, the decision-making is baffling, but hey, it’s not our money.
We’ll leave you with one of the best calls we’ve ever heard:
The Athletic is on some bullshit:
We always knew that there would be some changes coming once The Athletic was sold to the New York Times, but its recent move to make sports “apolitical” is particularly concerning. Defector Media released this article on some of the current, incredibly ridiculous choices the editorial team has made. Among the most egregious policies enacted was that staffers are allowed to donate to social causes, but if it becomes newsworthy enough that the Athletic is forced to report on it, said staff member will be “forbidden” from covering it. It’s a very gray line and feels reactionary. I hope The Athletic staff is at least close to unionizing because it looks like there’s a whole lot of nonsense coming their way.
Strongly recommend giving it a read:
Shit I’m Obsessed With by Gaby:
Oh man, it’s been a minute since I’ve done one of these! I am not taking any classes this summer, so one of the goals I’ve set for myself is to be better about building and sticking to routines. I was only diagnosed about a year ago, so I’ve been trying to figure out how it affects me. The struggle to establish habits is one of the main ways my ADHD manifests and the one that stresses me out the most. With the help of books on ADHD, youtube and TikTok, I’ve been trying different things. Here are the things that I’ve been incorporating into my lids recently:
Steno Pads: I cannot explain it, but writing my to-do lists on a steno pad is much better. Like any good ADHD-er, I’ve tried a million and one planners, to-do lists, etc. On the steno pad, I break out the lists by category (i.e. Home, Hockey, Personal/Health) and put the most important tasks at the top. I randomly picked this habit up at work, and it’s the one I keep coming back.
The Five Minute Journal: My mom gifted it to me a couple of years ago, but I’ve only just started using it! It’s nice to go back and see the things that made you happy.
The “everything has a place” strategy: I don’t know if this has another name or something, but that’s what I’m calling it. I watched a TikTok video about creating “drop zones” for things in your house. For example, instead of trying to dig through my makeup drawer, I put all of my everyday makeup in an acrylic box that now lives next to my mirror. All the brushes, creams, makeup, etc., that I regularly use go in there. Not the cutest look, but it has been super effective. It removes the pressure of trying to keep my makeup drawer organized (and then letting it get messy because I get overwhelmed), and I don’t have to spend 20 extra minutes trying to find that eyeliner that, for some godforsaken reason, I decided to put down on the cat tree anymore.
Washi Tape: I love washi tape but had way too much (like 150 rolls), so now I’m just using it to label stuff for pretty much anything in my house. It’s very helpful for those drop zones and mad cute.
There are a couple of other things I’m still trying out, so I’ll keep y’all updated!
Shit I’m Obsessed With by Perrye
I haven’t annoyed y’all with all the media I’ve been consuming for the past few weeks. Since I can’t travel anywhere except back to my motherland, aka Montreal, I have been in my international bag, which reflects in my recommendations, haha!
Guida astrologica per cuori infranti (EN: An astrological guide for broken hearts) - available on Netflix
Astrology, romcom, Italy - count me in! It didn’t take me long to be convinced about the show. It had all the ingredients for success, but what made it even better was the show’s quality. The storytelling was original. Every episode, they focused on a specific sign, not in a cliché “How I met your mother” way, but by organically incorporating them into the plot. Anyway, this is for you if you’re looking for something light and fun!
Skurk (EN: Baby Fever) - available on Netflix
I know that Netflix is technically on the decline, but their international shows are giving, and Skurk, a new Danish show, is one of them. The show follows Nana, a fertility doctor who accidentally gets herself inseminated after a drunken night out.
Think of Catastrophe mixed with Jane The Virgin vibes; you see the vision, right? The show became super engaging and funny as the story progressed and more characters were introduced. Overall, a wholesome but complicated dramedy on fertility!
Hacks - available on Crave in Canada & HBO MAX in the US
Let me tell you a quick story about why I started to watch this show. It’s random, but I saw this photo in a tweet (to which I could relate) and sent it to my friend. By the way, if you see me only using reaction memes from this show, mind ya business, ok?
Anyway, she responded, “I assume you’re a fan of Hacks to be sending me this?” which I (obviously) wasn’t, but drag me Océane! I didn’t even know the title of the show, but I caved in, binged the first season over the weekend and am now obsessed. Ava is one of the most selfish characters I’ve ever seen, and Marcus is the epitome of messy boots, but their lives suck so bad that I can’t even bring myself to hate them.
Also, this is a spoiler-free zone (I personally don’t care about spoilers, but for those who do) - episode 5 of season 1, called Falling, is a must-watch! I honestly don’t remember the last time I laughed as hard while watching a show.
Only Murders in the building - available on Disney+ internationally & Hulu in the US.
After following Gaby’s recommendation and being on my mental to-watch list forever, I decided to watch it. Worth it! Although I watch too many procedural shows, I’m not really into “true crime” podcasts or documentaries, so I thought I would be annoyed by the plot. However, they took an unexpected direction, and the characters are hilarious! Martin Short as a washed-up Broadway Director is my personal fave, but it’s also great to see Selena do what she does best, acting. The episodes are short and sweet, so catch up before the season two premiere on June 28th.
Congratulations to the graduating class of 2022!!
With love,
Gaby & Perrye
